Title: ANAK GEMILANG MALAYSIA
Post by: mrfeelgood on July 28, 2007, 02:09:05 PM
Astro Prima and some newspapers have been heavily criticised by many on what would have otherwise been an apt exercise to remember some of Malaysia's great sons and daughters who are no longer with us in celebration of our nation's 50th anniversary.

Astro is seen to have taken ownership of what is supposed to be a list of 50 Malaysians, highly regarded in their own fields because of their contributions, and turned it into a ranking exercise of unequals. All for profit!

In simple language Astro Prima charges 50 sen for every SMS vote and the final ranking depends on who gets the most public votes. And we know that SMS voting is the activity of the young, most of whom have no idea who Usman Awang or Zain Azrai are. So it was no surprise that in the early stages of the sms polls, Sudirman came out 3rd after Tun Razak (2nd) ... AND Datin Seri Endon (1st)???.

However, the point is - do we need to rank these outstanding Malaysians (altho' there are arguments that there are one or two names that should not even be on the list in the 1st place) whose contributions in their various fields are unique and special, by putting them into competition amongst themselves, and the winner is to be decided by SMS polling??

Many are asking Astro to stop the SMS exploitation, and bring back the dignity that these outstanding Malaysians brought to the Nation.

In fact one of those who strongly disagree with the way this search of finding “Anak Gemilang Malaysia” is handled is the daughter whose late father was among those nominated.

Halimah Mohd Said is the daughter of the late Tan Sri Dr Mohamed Said bin Mohamed. Her father, a medical doctor died in July 1996. He was the first elected Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan from 1959 to 1969.

She said Astro didn’t even bother to get his name right or his picture in. She called to complain. Astro said they'd call her back but never did.

Halimah was disturbed by the sms-ranking exercise and wrote a letter, dated July 13, to one of the leading English daily BUT your guess is good as mine. It was not published.

I'm glad u brought this up... I think many Malaysians do not agree with the wya this is being handled & promoted. though the intentions may be noble, but to make this into a competition? How low can they go? .. Do they think that this is Akademi Fantasia?
