Title: Which Steel Shaft is the Best?
Post by: Ajiz on April 17, 2009, 11:29:53 AM
Salam & apa kabar sifu2 kakigolf semua!!!

Mohon tumpang lalu and minta izin untuk postkan pertanyaan ...  :)

I am considering switching from graphite to steel shafts..... Well! Actually, not considering but I have already decided on this move.

I have not really gone to any pro shop to test my swing speed but have tried a few steel shafted iron clubs and I found that I am much more consistent with steel shafts.

Anyway! Now comes the not so easy task ..... choosing which steel shaft for my irons bcos there are a few options, namely NS Pro, Dynamic Gold, Rifle & Precision.

Which one should I choose... Btw, I am a high handicapper, playing in the mid 90s..

Appreciate any comments!

Thanks!  ;D

Or maybe I should just stick to graphites?  ???

Hi there Ajiz!

In the "old days," the general feeling was that high-handicappers, should stick to graphite, while steel shafted clubs are more suited for the better players, i.e. low-handicappers.

Well! That's not necessarily true anymore.

Correct me if I'm wrong but even Tiger Woods switched from a steel shaft to a graphite shaft in his driver in 2004. And now even PGA Tour golfers can be seen using graphite shafts.

The key, which I'm sure every club fitter would agree, is to try out both kinds and determine which type best fits your swing. So the best option for you to do right now is to test your swing speed. I think most club fitting shops have the necessary equipment to test your swing speed and they would be the best people to advise on this.

For all you know, you might not even have to switch to steel shafts.

But there are differences between steel and graphite that could help you choose one over the other.

Some advantages of using steel shafts over graphite :

1. Steel shafts are less expensive than graphite.
2. Steel shafts will last forever so long as they are not bent, rusted or pitted.
3. Steel shafts transmit more vibrations up the shaft to the golfer's hands than graphite .. the added feedback it gives you more "feel"  - but you might be tired of your hands stinging so much on miss-hit shots .. if you're a high handicapper that is!  ;D

But the most distinct advantage that graphite has over steel shaft is ... its lighter, and the difference is weight will translate to faster swing speed which ultimately means ... extra distance ....... that most golfers today are looking for....

Hope this info helps!  ;)

Cheers!

Bro,

Steel shaft gives better consistency but requires more 'energy'. Choosing steel shaft also must go thru proper club fitting shop. It's not just simply pick and fit into your current club heads. The weight and flex of your shaft must be matched with your club head..

I suggest you go and see club fitter. Try out some of their test clubs with different type of shaft, weight and flex.

But bear in mind that once you changed to new shafts, do not expect everything will go perfect as what you want..practice is still a must for you to get used to it and for you to enjoy the game...

My no cents opinion...

Cheers and Happy Golfing!

To ProBlade & Ahman,

Great advice!!!  :)

Like bro Ajiz, I was considering on switching to steel shaft too but wasn't really sure about making the change... So this is good info for me as well!

Will now definitely go for a swing test...

Btw, one of our forum members .. bro lorisimen has a club fitting shop... Will probably go there... bagi support a fellow forummer!!!  ;)

Thanks guys! Great feedback!

Saya dah setaun lebih tukar to steel, custom fit kat RGT lepas analyze swing. Score memang lebih konsisten, tapi tak sure it's becoz of custom fit club or steel shaft or both.

Anyway lepas ni, I would always custom fit the clubs, harga lebih kurang same je compare to if you buy off the shelve. But you get to use shaft & grip yg sesuai dgn your adress/impact and adjust/square the lie angle of the club head.

I think its not the custom fitted club nor the steel shaft, I think its coz you have the rhythm in your swing ......... & maybe the blues in your soul?  ;D

I started golf with graphite shaft...beginner set...

pastu, tengok orang pakai steel, terpengaruh....tukar callaway set with steel shaft...
berbulan dok adjust sebab masa tu main hentam cromo aje...

throw that set away....decided to have proper club that suit to my swing and height...buat custom fit ..Fit-ON and Tom Wishon...steel shaft - DG R300...
use the set till I love it...paksa diri...

Last year tukar set sebab Home Minister hadiah kan set Titleist ZB...again, I bawa ke club fitter to adjust lie to suit my swing....pakai steel NS PRO Super Peening...

love this set for 2 reasons...1st sebab Home Minister hadiahkan, 2nd play better than before...

again, clubs and owner are like partners/spouses...must compromise each other to have a "happily live"...;) >:D :P

Cheers!

Yang mana satu best?...for me of coz la steel, more consistent on direction. Distance! not so lah hehe...but what is the kan, nak distance pukui pakai wood or hybrid la, dah dekat2 nak kena ada accuracy pulak, yang penting consistence...janji wood n hybrid kena Power hehe... O0. My pandangan laaa....ada setuju??? hehe

Ist ... I'm no expert in this topic but I found this rather interesting article on the net regarding shaft flex and I thought of sharing with you guys here. Hope it helps anyway!!!...

Correct Shaft Flex: Stiff or Regular? Can You Handle the Truth?

One of the biggest equipment faux pas that golfers make is playing with golf shafts that are too stiff for their swing. Most of this can be directly traced to the golfer's ego. Just like there are no men driving VW Beetles with those dainty flower holders, the macho factor won't allow male golfers to play anything less than a stiff flex.

However, it is important to understand just how shaft flexibility affects performance. After all, the shaft is often known as the "engine" of the golf club.

Theodore P. Jorgensen authored a book called "The Physics of Golf." He conducted several experiments to demonstrate that the shaft of the golf club during the golf swing actually bends forward at impact. Jorgensen provides a graph indicating that the clubhead lags behind the hands at the start of the downswing. However, by the time that the club is about horizontal to the ground, the clubhead catches up to the hands and eventually leads the shaft at impact.

This is counterintuitive to what most people believe. While all golfers acknowledge that the clubhead lags at the start of the downswing, most assume that it continues to lag until well after impact. Furthermore, it is commonly assumed that the more flexible the shaft, the more that the clubhead lags throughout the swing. Golfers assume these things because that's what it feels like during the swing. However, as with many things in golf, what you feel is not always what is real.

In reality, the shaft unloads during the downswing and kicks forward by impact, regardless of swing speed or shaft flex rating. Our hands simply cannot outpace the clubhead as the shaft unloads during the golf swing. In fact, the more flexible the shaft, the more that the clubhead will kick forward, increasing velocity and effective loft. Therefore, all other things being equal, softer shafts provide more distance and a higher trajectory than their stiffer siblings. This applies to all human-generated swing speeds, including that of Tiger Woods. Tiger himself acknowledges this phenomenon writing, "If I had weaker shafts I'd hit the ball farther just because there's more flex in the shaft and more kick in a regular-flex shaft than in the stiff shafts I use."

So why doesn't Tiger switch to "senior" flex shafts? While a more flexible shaft will provide more distance, the tradeoff is less control. It is simply much more difficult to control the clubface at impact with a more flexible shaft. The last thing that Tiger wants to do is to miss more fairways! For the rest of us, distance is probably our primary concern. Regardless, it is very important for us to play with the right flex for our unique swings. If you haven't done so already, I recommend that you visit your local golf retailer and receive a proper fitting. Finding the correct flex is fast, easy, and usually free.

i have recently changed from stiff graphite (Graffaloy Prolaunch) to regular steel (TT Lite) purely due to accuracy. distance wise steel shaft would be lesser even though its regular. the weight actually slows the club head speed down and tempo.

there are a couple of popular steel shaft in the market...
TT Lite
Project X
NS Pro

there are all good, you just need to do club fitting to find out which best suites you.
